It was hot as hell that summer of 1968 in the streets of Philly. And it wasn’t easy to cool down with Sonny Hopson, “The Mighty Burner,” playing such heat on WHAT-AM! Hometown boys the Delfonics had just blown up the airwaves that winter with the single “La-La-Means I Love You,” and now, in May of ’68, their first record, “He Don’t Really Love You,” got another chance to shine, and this time it charted. Just a couple weeks later, “I’m Sorry”—the lead track off the LP La La Means I Love You—hit the air and charted into summer. The sweet soul from this group just wouldn’t stop, and the crew would drop two more charting singles that year! Hot hot hot!
William Hart, the lead vocalist—that unmistakable, sweet falsetto—the group leader, and prominent songwriter of the Delfonics, has stuck around for the long haul, writing, recording, and performing often through the years. But just because he never went anywhere doesn’t mean that he’s not back! And he’s back with a vengeance, teaming up with a young blood from Los Angeles who puts that fire back in the Delfonics sound!
Adrian Younge is the man with the plan behind the Black Dynamite Original Score, the brains behind the darkly majestic Something About April concept record, the “hot” L.A. producer working with Ghostface Killah and the Wu-Tang Clan! Younge gives that Philly sound a Cali twist, updates it, so to speak, with a beat and a bottom end—what the kids call “hip-hop.”
Both artists are hopeless romantics with an appreciation for the classics, so the teaming works perfectly. With his trademark sound, Younge brings the Delfonics into the new millennium, and William’s delicate falsetto and sentimental songwriting keeps them rooted fondly in the past. The resulting album, Adrian Younge Presents the Delfonics, written entirely by Hart and Younge, is where East Coast meets West Coast, past meets present, mentor meets student. It’s a modern take on classic sweet soul, and one you’re sure to dig!
