“In Oakland, California’s music scene rappers come a dime a dozen. But very few have the chops to claim MC lineage dating back to the golden era of Oakland rap. Veteran MC Dolla Will embodies the energy of a new-school rapper combined with the heritage of starting his career with bonafide Oakland legends Too $hort and the Hieroglyphics crew.

Dolla Will’s entrance into the music industry reads like a dream sequence. Hanging out with Casual of Hieroglyphics, a friend since high school, Will accompanied him to a studio session with Too $hort. “Casual asked if it was cool for me to bust a rap, then after I did it they thought it was tight, so I ended up hanging around $hort and his camp, building a working relationship.” The song, “Time After Time”, ended up making the cut for Too $hort’s double-album compilation Independence Day which ended up selling over 500,000 copies – Dolla Will’s first song earned him a gold plaque.

In the years since, Dolla Will went gold once again with $hort on the U Nasty album, and continued to reach his fans with features and collaborations with E-40, Petey Pablo, Lil Jon, and Bay locals Casual, Beeda Weeda, San Quinn and Turf Talk; and producers like Ant Banks, Lil Jon and Traxamillion.

Dolla Will brings the essence of the game to his music, having come up around true-school players and macks. This is a pedigree you can hear in his music and flow, and one that gave him a good head for business and a desire to remain independent. “I was going to sign a deal with Hieroglyphics some years ago and ended up not finalizing,” Will explains, “It must have been meant to be in some way, because I ended up hooking back up with Tajai recently. I had the Boss Flow record almost ready to go, so he said he’d like to do business with me and put that record out through Clear Label Records.”

The title “Boss Flow” means a lot to Dolla Will, who wants more than anything to bring back the quintessential Oakland feel to rap music. “Here in the Bay there’s a lot of kiddie rap and nursery rhymes, so I come across on a grown level, and I make adult music,” Will says. “When you’re a boss, you’re an elder in this and the flow I’m bringing to the table is real deal from my perspective, because I’m here to provide something the game is missing.”

For his die-hard fans, some of whom have been digging Dolla Will’s music since the 90s, Boss Flow has more of what they’ve been waiting for – a real solo album from Dolla Will – all killer, no filler. “There’s not a lot of features on this record ‘cause I wanted people to see that I can hold my own. Too $hort is on “Work That Body” and my man Aristotle on this song “Top Down”, and those are just hooks. This is a pure Dolla Will album.” With production from Aagee, DJ D-Sharp, DJ Toure’ and Aristotle, Boss Flow has a cohesive soundscape as a backdrop for Dolla Will’s game-laced lyrics.

“Soon after this I’m releasing a project called Dolla Will Presents The Bay, which will be full of the Bay features you’d expect, but I wanted to solidify my place first,” explains Dolla Will. For now, turn Boss Flow up in your headphones and get a dose of some real Oakland lyricism courtesy of Dolla Will.”
